Woodlands Park
Bath, Somerset
Woodlands Park is a contemporary, sustainable extension project designed to enhance and expand a cherished family home. Located at the rear of the property, the new addition responds to the clients’ desire for more internal floor area, improved flow, and a stronger relationship with the garden. The design creates a clear connection between indoors and out, offering flexible and comfortable living spaces tailored to modern family life.
The layout introduces a generous open-plan kitchen and dining area, seamlessly linked to a partially covered terrace. This transitional outdoor space serves as a natural extension of the interior, encouraging year-round enjoyment of the garden. Alongside this, the extension accommodates a new primary bedroom suite, complete with a dressing room and ensuite, providing a peaceful and private retreat within the home.
The design takes a resourceful approach, retaining the existing structure and extending it to meet the evolving needs of a growing family. By building upon what’s already there, the project makes efficient use of materials, labour, and land – a sustainable alternative to building from scratch.
Architecturally, the extension forms a low, rectilinear volume that contrasts the original building in form and character. It’s constructed using natural materials, including a timber structure and sustainably sourced cladding finished in shou sugi ban (charred timber), which adds richness and depth while enhancing durability. Tall ceilings and full-height glazing flood the interiors with natural light, creating a calm and spacious environment with a strong visual connection to the outdoors.
