The Bield

Loch Lomond Trossachs National Park, Scotland

The Bield, a modest 70m² barn conversion in the heart of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, has recently been completed, transforming a dark and neglected space into a light-filled, contemporary two-bedroom home. The barn, tucked into the northwest corner of an L-shaped configuration of two homes, originally sat in disrepair but has now been reimagined to meet the client’s brief for a bright and spacious living environment.

The design features a double-height, open-plan kitchen-dining-living area that spans the western side of the building, complete with vaulted ceilings and large roof lights, ensuring the space is flooded with natural light. The east side of the home includes a twin bedroom, bathroom, and utility area, with the mezzanine primary bedroom above offering a private, open view of the living space below.

A standout feature of the conversion is the 2.1m square picture window on the west facade, which not only fills the interior with light but also frames the stunning panorama of the garden and the Beinn Mhòr mountain in the distance, bringing the natural beauty of the surroundings into the heart of the home.

From the clients:

“We approached Tim as owners of a north-facing barn in a Scottish glen, with a view to turn it into a holiday home. His designs arrived on time and were in exceptionally good order. Our builder had no need to check a single detail. At the end of the project, we were left with a spacious, bright, warm, stunning home. The environmental assessor said it was one of the best insulated homes he’d ever encountered and every last person that visits gives us complements. Tim was quick to respond, open to ideas and input, and extremely good value. We’re forever thankful and wouldn’t hesitate to use him again.”
